Frequently Asked Questions
We're here to help
Choosing a song for your big day can be a very personal thing. However, there are some general guidelines we can offer:
A great dance song will be meaningful to the couple... if you and your partner already have a song tied to a particular memory or one that has lyrics that resonate with you, that can often be a great choice.
Particularly if you are new at this, the speed and regularity of a song can make or break whether you feel comfortable dancing to it. When you listen to the song, if you find yourself swaying, clapping, snapping, or tapping your foot to the beat, that is usually a sign that the rhythm is danceable. If you don't hear the beat on the first listen of the song, that's ok too! We'd be happy to work with you to find the rhythm in the song in order to make it work for you.
Most people choose the song they want to dance to, and then we help them determine how it would be best to dance to it. However, if you and your partner know that you wish to perform a particular ballroom dance, it might be better to start from there. We'd be happy to provide some suggestions of songs that would fit your event and the type of dance you would like to learn.
It is much easier to learn to dance to a song with which you are familiar. We strongly encourage both partners to listen to the song you have decided to dance to a few times before you begin learning your choreography.
Feel free to browse our playlists of danceable songs for inspiration!
- Wedding - First Dance
- Wedding - Parent/Child (these also make great Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dances)
- Wedding - Father/Daughter
- Wedding - Mother/Son

This depends on which song you select for your choreography, how much time you wish to invest into your dancing, and how elaborate you wish your dance to be. As you learn your choreography, your instructor will let you know which parts are reusable, and with what type of music, so you can continue to practice your skills even after your performance.
If you already have a type of dance in mind, please let us know! We can always suggest songs that would work with both your event and your chosen style of dance.
There is never a wrong time to start dancing! However, we usually suggest beginning to learn choreography about 6 months before a wedding or other big event. If you have less than 6 months, we would still be happy to work with you to craft a dance for your big day! Let us know your timeline and we'll help you to scope your dance into something that works for you.
If you want to get a head start more than 6 months before your wedding, we'd love to work with you! We would love to get you dancing as soon as possible, and we would suggest taking private lessons until about that 6 month mark, when we would begin to work on choreography. The skills you learn in your private lessons will only make your choreography better, and you will avoid getting sick of your dance or your song for the big day.
Of course! Every couple is unique, and we would be happy to discuss options with you. Please feel free to reach out to us with your details. You may schedule your complimentary consultation before determining which package is right for your needs... just let us know when you schedule that you have not yet made a decision and your instructor for the consultation will be able to advise you.
Generally speaking, most wedding couples working on a first dance choose the Adventure Package. If you are doing a second dance that requires less choreography, like a Father/Daughter or a Mother/Son, or if you are pressed for time to work on a first dance, we generally suggest the Comfort Package for those dances. The Performance Package is for the couple who wish to wow their audience and have plenty of time to prepare before the big day.
For general advice on what to wear to a ballroom lesson, please see the FAQ on our Dance with Us page.
If you are learning choreography for a particular event, your instructor will need some idea of your performance attire before they can start crafting the choreography. You may also wish to wear something similar to your performance attire during your lessons, whether that be your actual shoes for the big day, or a skirt that is a similar shape to the one you will be wearing. In particular, please let your instructor know as soon as possible if you or your partner will be wearing any of the following:
- Tight skirts or pants that restrict how big a step you can take
- Necklines, sleeves, or bodices that restrict how high you can lift your arms
- Any amount of dress train or other clothing that will drag on the floor and could trip you or your partner while dancing
- Large skirt volume, either due to the shape of the dress or a bustled train
- Hats, hairpieces, hairdos, or anything else that will change your height
- Any portion of clothing or jewelry that you will need to hold in place while you dance
- If you will be wearing a suit, consider if you will be taking off your suitcoat for the dance. If you will be wearing it, check to make sure it does not inhibit your arm movement or bunch up around your shoulders when you are in frame.
- Shoes significantly different from what you usually wear to your lesson, either in heel height or in traction. We strongly suggest wearing your performance shoes for the last few lessons leading up to the big day.
There are a number of venue factors that might impact your choreography.
- How big is your floor? Is it a rectangle, or a less standard shape?
- Where in the room is your floor? Does it have a 'front' like a stage might, or will the audience be watching from all sides? Are there any architectural features of the room that might impact the dance (sets of stairs, pillars, etc)?
- Will you have a live band playing your song, or will you be using a recording? If a recording, will someone be able to fade out your music at the right time, or do you need to have it cut to the proper length?
- What will be happening right before and directly after your dance? (We can practice this transition so you are at ease on the big day.)
The short answer is... it depends. We encourage you to share any choreography inspiration with your instructor so they can craft a dance that is perfect for you. Depending on how much time you wish to devote to learning your choreography and the song you have chosen, your instructor will use their best judgment to see if the moves that inspire you will fit your dance as they are, or with modification, at the instructor's discretion.
That being said, we will not teach you choreography that is copied wholesale from another source. We also teach our lessons in a facility that does not have any mats, and will not teach any moves that would be dangerous to learn without them.
Yes! While most of our choreography is for a single couple, we would be happy to choreograph dances with more than one couple involved. Examples of this might be a combined Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance, or a first dance that includes the rest of the wedding party partway through the song. We handle dances like this case-by-case, so please contact us if you are interested in hammering out details.
If you would like to employ our services for multiple individual dances at the same event (for example, both a first dance and a Father/Daughter, each to separate songs), we require a separate package for each of the dances.
No payment is required before or during your complimentary consultation. Once you decide upon a package, full payment will be required before you take your first lesson.
When you purchase a package, you are paying for lessons with an instructor to teach you choreography, but you are also paying for the creation of that choreography. Since much of the work of choreographing your dance is front-loaded, we unfortunately cannot refund any portion of a partially-completed package once your dance has been choreographed.
